Android 17 to Add Foldable Gaming Mode With Built-In Virtual Gamepad
Android 17 adds a foldable gaming mode with a half-screen virtual gamepad that emulates physical button presses for controller-supported games. Announced in 2026 by Mishaal Rahman on Reddit, it disables automatically when a physical controller connects and supports joystick layout, button-size, and haptic tweaks.
Google is bringing a dedicated gaming mode to foldable Android devices with Android 17, featuring a virtual gamepad that occupies half the screen and is designed to work with any game that supports physical controllers.
The feature, announced in 2026 and set to launch in the coming months, was detailed by Google’s Mishaal Rahman on Reddit. The virtual controller operates at the system level, emulating physical button presses rather than relying on in-app touch overlays. Its layout includes a D-pad, left and right virtual sticks, A, B, X, and Y buttons, L1, L2, L3, R1, R2, and R3 triggers, and a start button.
Users will be able to customize the gamepad in several ways, including keeping virtual joysticks inline or staggered, scaling button sizes, and toggling haptic feedback on or off. Activating the mode requires simply unfolding the device before or after launching a compatible game. If a physical controller is connected, the virtual gamepad will automatically turn off.
Google framed the feature as a solution to a practical inconvenience. “While touch controls work incredibly well for many titles, certain games are better enjoyed with physical gamepads,” Rahman wrote. “The problem is that carrying a Bluetooth controller or a snap-on gamepad with you everywhere isn’t always convenient.”
The feature is specific to foldable devices, where the open form factor provides enough screen real estate to split between game visuals and the virtual controller. This could make foldables a more practical option for on-the-go gaming without requiring additional accessories.
