Android Central Lays Off Entire Staff but Owner Future Says Site Will Continue
Future says the Android-focused site will continue publishing after laying off its remaining full-time staff on September 30, 2026. New posts appeared the next day from freelancers, while four of six listed staffers publicly confirmed their departures.
Android Central laid off its remaining full-time staff on September 30, 2026, but parent company Future has confirmed the Android-focused publication will keep publishing.
Four of the six staffers listed on Android Central’s staff page publicly announced their layoffs: Shruti Shekar, Derrek Lee, Harish Jonnalagadda, and Nicholas Sutrich. Former senior editor Namerah Saud Fatmi also updated her LinkedIn to reflect the end of her tenure at the site. Both Lee, the site’s managing editor, and Sutrich confirmed that all remaining staff were let go.
The affected employees said they were not told whether the site would shut down. New posts appeared on Android Central the following day, but were written by freelance contributors rather than the former full-time staff.
Future spokesperson Nicole Martineau told The Verge: “Future will continue to publish Android Central. We’ll share further information about the future of the site in due course.” Martineau added that the company would not be providing further comment at this time. No reason for the layoffs was given.
Android Police, another Android-focused blog owned by Valnet, also recently laid off at least two staffers and currently lists an editorial team of four. Valnet, which also previously acquired Polygon, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The back-to-back cuts at two prominent Android-focused outlets may suggest ongoing pressure on niche tech publishing, though neither company has publicly explained the decisions.
