Anthropic Commits 5% of Shares to New Public Benefit Fund
The fund could receive another 2% of shares for every 50% increase in the company’s value, expanding resources for public-benefit work. Governance details are due in coming months; Anthropic has committed $200 million to study AI’s job-market impact.
Anthropic announced in October 2026 that it is creating a “public benefit fund” designed to support projects aimed at societal good, committing 5% of its shares to the initiative.
The fund will be structured as a wholly-owned entity within Anthropic, giving the company what it describes as “increased flexibility and scale” to direct resources toward public benefit efforts. Anthropic also outlined an option to contribute an additional 2% of shares for every 50% increase in the company’s value.
The company offered broad examples of how the fund’s resources might be used, including “large donations to traditional nonprofits or direct distributions to specific populations.” Anthropic also pointed to the potential impact of AI on the job market as an area of concern — one it has already committed $200 million to study — noting that “given the pace of AI progress, bolder approaches may be needed.”
The announcement comes as the AI industry contends with what Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has characterized as “fundamentally a crisis of trust” stemming from increasingly negative public sentiment toward the sector.
Governance details remain limited. Anthropic said it will share more information about the fund’s structure and decision-making process in the coming months, leaving open the question of who will determine which public benefits receive funding.
