Apple Strikes Deal to Hire Team and License Tech from Shuttered Podcast Startup Huxe

Apple’s June 9 filing with the European Commission details a reverse acqui-hire: employment offers to some Huxe AI staff plus a non-exclusive IP license. Huxe, founded by former NotebookLM developers, shut down on May 21 and deleted user data.

Apple has disclosed an agreement to hire employees and license intellectual property from Huxe AI, a personalized audio startup that shut down earlier in 2026, in what is known as a reverse acqui-hire deal.

As first reported by MacRumors, Apple notified the European Commission on June 9, 2026 that it had agreed to make employment offers to “certain employees of Huxe AI” and to “receive a non-exclusive license to Huxe’s intellectual property rights.” The filing does not identify which employees received offers, whether they accepted, or what Apple plans to do with the technology.

Huxe was founded by developers who previously worked on the AI-generated podcast features in NotebookLM, the Google product recently renamed Gemini Notebook. The startup announced on May 21, 2026 that it was shutting down, removing its app from the Apple and Google stores, halting service, and deleting user data. “The team is moving on to new things, and we won’t be continuing development of the product,” the company said in a statement on its website. Apple notified the European Commission of the deal roughly three weeks later.

Reverse acqui-hires have emerged in recent years as a mechanism for larger companies to bring in talent and technology from startups without acquiring them outright — an arrangement that may attract less antitrust scrutiny than a full acquisition.

Huxe’s shutdown came one day after Spotify unveiled AI-powered podcast generation features of its own. Apple’s deal with Huxe could signal an interest in adding similar personalized audio functionality to its Podcasts app, though the filing offers no confirmation of that direction.
