Apple to Require 18+ Age Ratings for Dating Apps and AI Companion Features on the App Store

Apple announced in November 2026 that it will require dating apps, AI companion chatbots, and apps with location-sharing features to carry minimum age ratings of 18 on the App Store, as part of an expanded set of content descriptors for developers.

Starting November 16th, 2026, Apple will update its App Store Connect age rating questionnaire to ask developers whether their apps allow users to share real-world location with others, or include features that enable dating, relationship, or sexual behaviour between real people or virtual companions. All apps must complete the new declarations by January 12th, 2027.

Apps with dating and relationship features will be assigned a minimum age rating of 18. Apps with location-sharing capabilities will see their minimum age rating affected in some regions, depending on local regulations.

Apple already maintains an 18-plus rating category on the App Store, which has historically applied to apps featuring gambling, violence, references to drugs, alcohol, or tobacco, and nudity or sexual content. Most dating platforms already carry adult-only ratings, but the expanded requirements are intended to close gaps that could allow minors to access such content.

The new rules also extend to AI chatbots that support sexual or romantic interactions, and virtual “girlfriend/boyfriend” simulators. Apple cited the potential mental health risks these types of apps could pose to younger users as part of the rationale for the expanded restrictions.

The changes could affect a broad range of apps beyond traditional dating platforms, including any app that incorporates AI companion features or real-world location sharing with other users. Developers will need to review and update their age rating declarations ahead of the January 2027 deadline to remain compliant with the new requirements.
