Apple Updates App Store Rules to Explicitly Ban AI “Nudify” Apps
Apple now requires developers to proactively prevent and remove nonconsensual sexual images, with violations risking App Store removal. Its October 2026 rules also target bait-and-switch “nudification” features and block trafficking or child-exploitation apps from alternative distribution.
Apple updated its App Store guidelines in October 2026 to more explicitly prohibit so-called “nudify” apps — tools that use AI to generate intimate images of people without their consent.
The changes, announced on a Friday, require developers to “proactively prevent and remove” nonconsensual sexual images as part of App Store content moderation requirements. Developers who “fail to implement adequate safeguards” or “don’t remedy violations after notice” risk removal from the App Store. Apple also clarified an existing rule against “bait-and-switch” apps — those that add or change features, including “nudification,” after receiving App Store approval.
Additionally, Apple’s updated rules more clearly state that apps that “facilitate human trafficking or the exploitation of children” will be removed from the App Store and “blocked from alternative distribution.”
The rule changes follow significant criticism directed at Apple after X users used the platform’s Grok AI tool to generate nonconsensual, sexualized deepfakes earlier in the year, including images of minors. Apple did not remove X or Grok from the App Store at the time.
The updates may signal that Apple is tightening enforcement around AI-generated content following that backlash, though the practical impact will depend on how consistently the new requirements are applied to developers on the platform.
