Epilogue’s Flashback App Lets You Use the Game Boy Camera with Your Smartphone

Epilogue’s free Flashback app (2026) uses the $50 GB Operator to read from the Game Boy Camera’s Mitsubishi M64282FP sensor, outputting “identical” 128×112, 0.01434‑MP photos with shutter/gain/exposure tweaks and 32 palettes. No hardware? A simulation mode uses the phone camera to mimic the dithered look and saves to Camera Roll.

Epilogue has released a free iOS and Android app called Flashback that allows users to take photos with the original Game Boy Camera accessory connected to a smartphone via the company’s GB Operator hardware.

The app launched in 2026, building on Epilogue’s earlier work turning the Game Boy Camera into a desktop webcam two years prior. The GB Operator itself is a $50 accessory that connects Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance cartridges to PCs and other devices.

When paired with a Game Boy Camera, the Flashback app reads data directly from the accessory’s Mitsubishi M64282FP sensor, producing images identical to what the hardware would have captured decades ago — 0.01434-megapixel photos at 128 x 112 pixels in a limited color range. The app expands on the original experience by offering adjustable settings including shutter speed, gain, exposure, sharpness, dither, and grain, along with 32 different color palettes. Images are saved directly to the phone’s Camera Roll.

The Game Boy Camera originally launched in 1998 at $90. It captured images in just four shades of gray, and photos were largely inaccessible without a printer or a third-party cable to extract them.

For those without the physical hardware, the Flashback app also includes a software simulation mode. In this mode, the smartphone’s own camera captures photos and processes them to mimic the Game Boy Camera’s low-resolution, dithered output.

The GB Operator and Flashback app together offer a lower-cost path to using the Game Boy Camera with modern devices compared to alternatives such as the $240 Analogue Pocket, which also supports the accessory.
