Fan-Fiction Site Archive of Our Own Could Be Down for Up to 4 Weeks After Maintenance Failure
After a routine overnight maintenance failure, AO3 says restoration may take about two weeks—or up to four—and hopes to return sooner in a degraded state. OTW has not disclosed the cause; speculation about PHP flaws is unlikely because AO3 uses Ruby on Rails.
Archive of Our Own (AO3), one of the internet’s largest fan-fiction platforms, may remain offline for up to four weeks after a routine maintenance window went wrong, the site announced on October 29, 2026.
The outage began when the site went dark during what was described as scheduled overnight maintenance. AO3’s status page now warns that a full recovery could take significantly longer than expected. “We estimate that service restoration for AO3 will take around 2 weeks but it could be up to 4 weeks,” the status page reads. “We are hopeful that we will be able to bring the site back up in a degraded state sooner.”
AO3 is operated by the Organization for Transformative Works (OTW), a nonprofit that relies on volunteers and donations to run the platform. The site hosts stories written by fans about their favorite characters and fictional worlds, and its community responded quickly to the news — within two hours of the announcement, the status page’s posts had drawn millions of views and widespread panicked commentary across social media.
Some users have speculated the outage may be connected to last week’s “PHP Armageddon,” in which tools from OpenAI and Google Wiz identified two critical security flaws in PHP, the programming language powering roughly 70% of the internet. However, AO3 is built on Ruby on Rails, a different framework, making a connection to that vulnerability unlikely.
The cause of the outage has not been publicly disclosed. OTW and AO3 did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
