Figma Launches AI Design Rules Tool and Expands Code Layers Beta at First India Config Event
Figma Specs centralizes design libraries, guidelines and canvas references in a Markdown file to make on-canvas AI outputs more consistent. The company also moved code layers to public beta at its October 2026 India event, after a June private beta.
Figma announced a set of new features at its first Config event in India in October 2026, including a Markdown-based editor called Figma Specs, expanded AI agent controls, and a public beta for its code layers feature.
Figma Specs is a Markdown editor that lets teams define their design language in a single document. The file can stand alone or sit within the Figma canvas, and users can embed references to canvas elements, FigJam diagrams, code layers, and designs. Teams can also pull in design libraries, code libraries, and guidelines to give both human collaborators and AI agents a centralized source for brand and design rules.
The push toward structured design rules comes as Figma broadens access to its on-canvas AI agent. Because AI outputs are non-deterministic, the company says tools like Specs are intended to steer agents toward more consistent results.
The code layers feature, which adds interactive coding directly to canvas designs for richer prototypes, was announced in private beta in June 2026. Figma moved it to public beta at the India event. Users can ask the agent to convert a design into code or modify existing code to iterate on a prototype.
Figma’s chief design officer Loredana Crisan told TechCrunch that AI has dramatically changed how software is built. “There are 17-times more lines of code being produced today than in the past. But when you’re looking at releases, only 1.3-times more releases,” she said, adding that much of that code is written to explore and define a product rather than to ship.
The company also announced support for more than 20 new tools through its MCP, including Open Code, Dia, Grok Bot, and Indian AI startup Sarvam. Additionally, Figma is integrating Payload — the open-source headless CMS it acquired last year — with its Figma Make product for generating dynamic websites. Payload’s downloads have grown sixfold over the past 12 months.
Figma opened its first India office late last year. The company says India is its largest market by users outside the United States, with the platform used by 40% of India’s top 100 companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange.
