Fireflies Adds Free Dictation Feature to Mac and Windows Apps

Fireflies now turns speech into text in any active Mac or Windows app, from Slack to AI prompts, using Fn or Ctrl + Win. Talk is included at no extra cost, with recordings not retained and transcripts stored locally.

Fireflies.ai launched a dictation feature called Fireflies Talk for its Mac and Windows desktop apps in September 2026, expanding the company’s voice AI offerings beyond meeting note-taking.

The feature works similarly to competing dictation tools such as Wispr Flow, Willow, and SuperWhisper. On Mac, users press the Fn key; on Windows, they press Ctrl + Win. From there, Fireflies records and transcribes spoken words into the active text field of whatever app is open — whether that’s email, Slack, a document editor, or an AI prompt interface.

Fireflies CEO Krish Ramineni explained the rationale behind the move: “People speak roughly 3x faster than they type, and voice is a much more natural way to get work done. Meetings were just the starting point; the bigger vision has always been Fred as your AI teammate throughout the day. Talk takes Fireflies beyond meetings into email, Slack, docs, prompts, and wherever else you work.”

The company has bundled Fireflies Talk into its existing subscription plans at no additional charge. Competitor Wispr took a different approach, offering its meeting notetaker for free to existing dictation users. Speechify has also introduced cross-app dictation capabilities.

On privacy, Fireflies said it does not retain any voice recordings and stores dictation transcripts locally on the user’s device.

The dictation launch is part of a broader push by Fireflies to build out its platform beyond meeting transcription. The company introduced “mini-apps” last year to extract insights from meetings in various ways, and last month it launched a feature to manage users’ email inboxes and draft messages on their behalf. Fireflies has also indicated plans to develop an assistant that draws on the context it accumulates about its users over time.
