Mozilla has released Firefox 157, a design overhaul for the browser that introduces rounded tabs, a redesigned address bar, refreshed colors, updated icons, and new themes. The update, published September 29, 2026, rolls out to all desktop and mobile users.

The redesign brings Firefox’s desktop and mobile versions into a shared design language for the first time. Mozilla describes the changes as a “renewal” for the browser, and says the visual updates will come with “no cost to your browser performance.”

Customization options have also expanded. Mozilla previewed some of the new theme options earlier this year, including a dozen color choices each available in light and dark mode, along with additional wallpapers.

Firefox 157 also marks the return of Compact Mode, a feature brought back following user requests. According to Mozilla, Compact Mode “reduces the size of your tabs and toolbar to give more of your screen to the web,” and includes an auto-compact option designed for smaller screens.

Mozilla framed the redesign as part of a broader period of updates for Firefox, which has seen the addition of homepage widgets, Split View, a built-in VPN, and controls for disabling AI features over the past year. The browser also launched a Smart Window AI mode earlier in 2026. The company noted that Firefox’s updated rounded interface now visually resembles Chrome more closely, which could position it alongside other browsers competing on design and AI features.
