Google announced Wear OS 7, the next major update to its smartwatch platform, at Google I/O 2026. The update introduces several new features aimed at making information more accessible directly from a user’s wrist.
The headline addition is Live Updates — an iPhone-style notification format that Google previously brought to Android. On Wear OS 7, Live Updates will surface real-time information such as delivery tracking and sports scores, and can appear on either a watch or a paired smartphone. The feature will also display the status of automated tasks being handled by an AI agent.
Wear OS 7 is also replacing the platform’s existing Tiles — small, widget-like panels for glanceable information — with a new system called Wear Widgets. These are designed to more closely resemble Android widgets and will be available in small and large layouts that align with Android’s 2×1 and 2×2 widget formats.
On the AI side, Google is bringing Gemini Intelligence — its branding for personalized and proactive Gemini features — to select watches launching later in 2026. No specific device names or a precise release date were provided.
Google is also claiming up to a 10 percent improvement in battery life for users upgrading from Wear OS 6 to Wear OS 7, attributing the gain to ongoing power optimizations. The company says the improvements are intended to let users spend more time with their favorite apps, though actual battery performance will remain unconfirmed until the update is widely available.
The announcements position Wear OS 7 as a platform update focused on real-time awareness, tighter integration with Android, and incremental efficiency gains for existing smartwatch users.
