Google Brings Gemini AI Assistant to Apple CarPlay via Google Maps

Google Maps now brings Gemini’s hands-free, multi-step conversations to Apple CarPlay in the U.S., with a global rollout underway. Drivers can request recommendations and directions—such as avoiding tolls—but the update excludes Gemini’s Personal Intelligence features.

Google has expanded its Gemini AI assistant to Apple CarPlay users, making conversational navigation available through Google Maps as of October 2026. The feature is live now for drivers in the United States, with Google stating that a global rollout is also underway, though specific regional availability details have not yet been confirmed.

The update comes roughly 12 months after Google first introduced Gemini to Android Auto. CarPlay users can now interact with the voice assistant hands-free by tapping the Gemini icon within Google Maps on their car’s infotainment display. The assistant supports multi-step queries — for example, a driver can ask for place recommendations and then request directions to a chosen destination while specifying preferences such as avoiding toll roads.

Google describes the CarPlay integration as a conversational tool for reporting traffic disruptions and finding information about stops and places while on the go.

Notably absent from the CarPlay update are the Personal Intelligence features Google announced separately for Gemini in Android Auto and vehicles with Google built-in. Those features allow the assistant to access user data from Google apps including Gmail, Calendar, Maps, Photos, YouTube, and Search. It is not yet clear whether CarPlay users will receive similar personalization capabilities; Google has not responded to questions on the matter.
