Google Ending Free Cellular Safety Features on Pixel Watch 2 and 3 in December 2026
From December 12, 2026, LTE Pixel Watch 2 and 3 users will need a paid carrier plan for cellular Emergency SOS, Fall Detection and Safety Check. The features remain available over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, with Google notifying users by email and in-app alerts.
Google announced in October 2026 that it will end free cellular access to its Safety Signal features on LTE versions of the Pixel Watch 2 and 3, effective December 12th. After that date, users will need a paid mobile carrier plan to use Emergency SOS, Fall Detection, and Safety Check over a cellular network.
The free Safety Signal connectivity had been included as part of a Google Health Premium subscription, allowing those emergency features to function over LTE without a separate carrier plan. That arrangement will no longer apply once the mid-December cutoff arrives.
Google says it will notify affected users via in-app notifications and email. From the time that email is sent, users will have a 30-day transition period during which Safety Signal features remain accessible without a mobile plan. Access ends after December 12th regardless of where users are in that window.
The change does not eliminate the safety features entirely. Emergency SOS, Fall Detection, and Safety Check will continue to work on the Pixel Watch 2 and 3 after the cutoff — but only when the watch is connected to Wi-Fi or paired to a smartphone via Bluetooth. Users who want cellular-only access to those features will need to add a carrier plan to their device.
For Pixel Watch owners who rely on Safety Signal as a standalone safety net — particularly in situations where a paired phone may not be nearby — the loss of free LTE connectivity could reduce the practical reach of those emergency tools.
