Google Gemini Now Lets Users Generate and Edit Documents Directly in Chat

Users can now edit generated files in place, from PDFs and Google Docs to spreadsheets, slides, Markdown, TXT, and code. The feature rolled out to all Gemini users on October 29, 2026; non-PDF editing is web-only.

Google has added file generation and editing capabilities directly inside Gemini chats, allowing users to create, preview, and modify documents without leaving the app. The feature became available to all Gemini users on October 29, 2026.

Supported file types include PDFs, Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown files, TXT files, and code. PDF previewing and editing works on both the web and mobile versions of Gemini, while support for all other file formats is currently limited to the web version.

The update builds on a capability Google introduced earlier in 2026, which allowed users to generate and download files within Gemini. The new addition lets users edit those files in place. Specifically, users can expand documents into full-screen mode and highlight sections of text to prompt Gemini to answer questions or make changes — for example, selecting a table and asking Gemini to convert it into a graph.

Google already offered some file-editing functionality through Gemini integrations in its Workspace apps, such as the Gemini sidebar in Google Docs. The new in-chat editing feature consolidates that workflow within Gemini itself.

Anthropic introduced a comparable feature earlier in 2026, enabling users of its Claude assistant to generate and edit documents and presentations within Claude chats.
