Google Is Cutting Free Access to Gemini Flash and Pro Starting October 9, 2026

From October 9, 2026, free Gemini users will be limited to Flash Lite, while Flash requires Google AI Plus at $4.99/month. Gemini Pro and Deep Think will be restricted to AI Pro ($19.99/month) and Ultra ($99.99/month), while AI Plus loses Pro access.

Google is restricting free-tier access to its Gemini AI models, effective October 9, 2026. From that date, users on a free plan will only have access to the Gemini Flash Lite model, losing the ability to choose between Flash Lite, Flash, and Pro as they can today.

To access the standard Flash model after October 9, users will need a Google AI Plus subscription, priced at $4.99 per month. However, that subscription tier is also being downgraded — AI Plus subscribers will lose access to Gemini Pro, and Google says it will notify affected subscribers by email when that change takes effect.

Access to Gemini Pro and a “Deep Think” advanced reasoning option will be limited to users on either a Google AI Pro subscription at $19.99 per month or an Ultra subscription at $99.99 per month.

Google says users across all tiers will still be able to select from low, medium, and high effort levels when using each model. However, choosing higher effort levels may consume a user’s Gemini usage limit more quickly.

The changes consolidate Gemini’s most capable models behind higher-cost subscription tiers. For free users who currently rely on Flash or Pro for more demanding tasks, this could mean either accepting the reduced capabilities of Flash Lite or paying for a subscription to maintain their current level of access.
