Google launched its Universal Cart tool in the US in October 2026, bringing an AI-powered shopping feature to both the Gemini app and Google Search ahead of the holiday shopping season.

Universal Cart lets users save products from multiple retailers into a single unified space across different Google platforms. Items added through the Gemini app or Google Search’s AI Mode are all stored in the same cart. Google has also announced plans to integrate Universal Cart with Gmail and YouTube, though no timeline has been set for those additions.

The tool includes several features designed to simplify online shopping. Google will send notifications about price drops and restocks for saved items, removing the need to check individual retailer websites. The cart can also surface relevant promotional codes alongside saved products. When it comes time to pay, users can either check out through Google Wallet or transfer items directly to a retailer’s own cart. Universal Cart also works with Google Wallet to analyze the perks of a user’s saved credit cards and suggest the best payment option for a given purchase.

Google first previewed Universal Cart at its I/O event in May 2026. The rollout arrives as competition in AI-assisted shopping is increasing. Rivals including OpenAI and Meta have launched AI assistants capable of shopping online on a user’s behalf, and Shopify recently announced it is opening its platform to allow more AI agents to browse and purchase from its listings.

The broader push by major technology companies into AI shopping tools reflects a bet that automated assistants will play a growing role in how consumers shop online — though how widely users will adopt such tools remains to be seen.
