Google Tests Gemini Feature That Makes Phone Calls to Businesses on Your Behalf
Google’s “Call for Me” can share user-approved personal information, expanding beyond inquiries to reservations, appointment changes and product holds. Testing begins in September 2026 for U.S. Pixel 11 owners with Gemini subscriptions and the beta Phone app.
Google announced in September 2026 a new Gemini feature called “Call for Me” that allows its AI to place phone calls to businesses on a user’s behalf. The feature is currently in testing and will initially roll out to Pixel 11 owners in the U.S. who pay for a Gemini subscription, and will also require the beta version of Google’s Phone app for Android.
With “Call for Me,” Gemini can handle tasks such as checking whether a product is in stock, making a restaurant reservation, rescheduling an appointment, or placing items on hold. The AI can introduce itself to a business, navigate automated phone menus, wait on hold, and carry out the conversation. Calls are made directly from the user’s own phone number, and users can follow along via a live transcript and take over the call at any time.
A key addition in this version is the ability for Gemini to share personal information that the user has approved, which Google says allows the AI to handle a broader range of actions compared to earlier calling features.
Google cited the complexity of real-world conversations as the reason for the limited initial rollout, saying it needs time to refine the feature before expanding it more widely.
“Call for Me” builds on a series of AI-assisted calling tools Google has developed over the years. Previous features include “Ask for Me,” which let Gemini call businesses to ask about pricing or services, and “Hold for Me” and “Talk to a Live Rep,” which navigate phone trees and wait on hold until a live person answers. A feature called “Direct My Call” can display menu options for navigating automated phone systems. Google also famously demonstrated an earlier version of AI-assisted calling at its I/O developer conference, where Google Assistant called a salon to book a reservation.
The new feature puts Google in the company of other AI platforms, including Meta’s Muse and Instinct, which the source notes are also capable of making calls on users’ behalf.
