Laytr App Lets Users Save Any Web Content Privately, Without an Account
Built after Pocket shut down in August 2026, Laytr keeps articles, videos, PDFs and more on users’ devices and in iCloud, with no account or developer access. It syncs across Apple devices, with 30 saves free and Premium from $1.99/month.
A new app called Laytr launched in October 2026, offering a way to save virtually any type of online content — articles, recipes, screenshots, videos, PDFs, bookmarks, and tabs — for later access across Apple devices.
The app was built by Mostafa Talaat, an indie developer based in the Ontario area, and is published under his company Waitery Inc. Talaat told TechCrunch he was motivated to build Laytr after learning that Mozilla’s read-it-later app Pocket shut down in August 2026. A key design choice was keeping the app entirely server-free. “What you save says a lot about you, and I didn’t want to be holding it. Everything stays on your device and in your own iCloud,” Talaat said.
Because no account is required, Laytr’s developer cannot access what users save. Content syncs across iPhone, iPad, and Mac via iCloud. The app automatically sorts saved items by file type and lets users organize them into collections called “cases.” Users can also set a reminder date for any saved item. Laytr can import Pocket exports, so users with an existing archive do not need to start from scratch.
The privacy-first approach does come with trade-offs. The app will not personalize a feed or use AI to summarize or tag items.
Laytr is free for up to 30 saved items. A Premium tier is available at $1.99 per month, $14.99 per year, or a one-time $39.99 lifetime purchase — currently discounted to $24.99 through the end of December. If a subscription lapses, existing saves are retained; users simply cannot add new items until they resubscribe or stay within the 30-item free limit. The full archive can be exported at any time as a ZIP file containing Markdown and HTML versions of every saved item.
Talaat said the app will expand its language support over time.
