macOS 27 Golden Gate Arrives With Siri AI at Its Core

Apple’s first deep macOS AI integration is live, but Siri AI launches in beta, off by default and behind a wait list. It’s English-only, unavailable initially in the EU and China, while advanced Voice Mode requires an M3 Mac with 12GB RAM.

Apple released macOS 27 Golden Gate on September 14, 2026, making the operating system update available to download on compatible Macs. The release follows the software’s announcement at WWDC in June 2026 and marks Apple’s first deep integration of AI capabilities into macOS.

The headline feature is Siri AI, a rebuilt version of Apple’s assistant running on Apple Foundation Models based on Google Gemini. The new Siri brings improved natural language processing along with computer vision and image-generation capabilities. It includes a dedicated app, screen awareness, automatic proofreading, personal context, and a customizable voice experience. Siri AI is also being built into Spotlight, which will now route suitable questions to the assistant and open a chat window for continued conversation. A Visual Intelligence feature lets users take a screenshot and immediately prompt Siri to answer questions about or act on the image.

Despite the launch, Siri AI remains in beta, is turned off by default, and is rolling out gradually via a wait list. It is currently English-only and will not be immediately available in the EU or China due to regulatory concerns. Some advanced features, including an improved Voice Mode, require an M3 Mac or newer with at least 12 GB of RAM.

macOS 27 Golden Gate is compatible only with Apple Silicon Macs. Supported devices include MacBook Pro (2020 and later), MacBook Air (2020 and later), Mac mini (2020 and later), iMac (2021 and later), Mac Studio (2022 and later), Mac Pro (2023 and later), and the MacBook Neo (2026). Apple confirmed last year that macOS 26 Tahoe was the final update to support Intel-powered Macs.

Beyond Siri, Safari is receiving a notable update with a feature called Topics, which uses AI to automatically group browser tabs together. Users can then close or save those groups for later. The update is available now via System Settings > General > Software Update.
