Microsoft has given its developer-optimized Windows experience a formal name: Project Zenith. Announced in 2026, the initiative is designed for developer-focused devices equipped with 64GB or more of unified memory, offering a preconfigured Windows setup alongside a curated set of developer tools.
AMD unveiled the first Project Zenith device at IFA, a miniature PC powered by Ryzen AI Halo chips. Microsoft says more Project Zenith devices from manufacturers using different silicon are expected “in the coming months.”
The setup comes with preinstalled tools including Visual Studio Code, GitHub Copilot, PowerToys, WinAppCLI, and Windows Dev Skills. File Explorer is configured to display file extensions, hidden files, and the full path in the title bar. Microsoft has also disabled recently used files and folders, sync provider tips, Start menu tips, and account notifications, while enabling long-path support and the PowerToys Command Palette by default.
Logan Iyer, CVP of Windows platform and developer at Microsoft, said the devices allow developers to “run 30B+ parameter models locally and unmetered — accelerating experimentation while helping reduce reliance on metered cloud tokens.” Iyer described Project Zenith as “the result of listening to developers about what they need from Windows today, and where they want the platform to go next.”
Microsoft had previously announced a similar developer-optimized Windows effort at its Build conference earlier in 2026. Project Zenith represents the developer-side component of what the company has described as a broader effort to improve Windows 11 this year.
For developers, the platform could reduce friction in local AI model experimentation and streamline the out-of-box Windows setup — changes that may otherwise require manual configuration on a standard Windows 11 install.
