OpenAI Acquires AI Biotech Startup Orchestra Bio to Expand Life Sciences Tools
OpenAI will integrate Orchestra Bio’s AI agents for drug-discovery operations into Rosalind and Rosalind Workbench, tools for planning experiments and analyzing results. The four-year-old startup had raised about $20 million; Moderna and Novo Nordisk are Rosalind customers.
OpenAI acquired Orchestra Bio, a four-year-old AI biotech software startup, the company announced on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Orchestra Bio builds AI agents that help biotech companies manage drug discovery operations, including tracking finances and resolving scheduling issues with clinical trials. The startup had raised approximately $20 million as of 2025, with backing from Andreessen Horowitz, Atria, and 8VC.
OpenAI says it will integrate Orchestra’s team and technology into Rosalind, its AI model for life sciences research, and the Rosalind Workbench — a tool designed to help researchers plan experiments and analyze results. OpenAI has already secured Moderna and Novo Nordisk as customers for Rosalind.
The acquisition reflects a broader pattern of large AI labs building specialized software for major industries such as pharmaceuticals. For startups operating in spaces adjacent to these labs, the deal illustrates one possible outcome: absorption rather than being outcompeted by new features from a larger rival.
