OpenAI Adds Visual Ads to ChatGPT Image Generation Results
The test begins in late October 2026 in the U.S., placing clearly labeled ads beside AI-generated images without affecting ChatGPT’s responses. OpenAI says the format could eventually reach its 1.2 billion weekly users worldwide.
OpenAI is adding visual display ads to ChatGPT, with ads set to appear alongside images that users ask the chatbot to generate. The rollout is expected to begin later in October 2026, initially limited to users in the United States.
The new ad format expands OpenAI’s existing ad product lineup, which the company introduced earlier in 2026 to support its free and low-cost subscription tiers. Ads were previously expanded to India in August. The visual ads will feature products and services from an initial test group of advertisers, will be clearly labeled, and will not influence ChatGPT’s responses, according to the company.
OpenAI cited competition as part of the backdrop for the move, noting the launch of Meta’s Muse — a free agentic AI app described as a growing competitor to leading AI chatbots including ChatGPT. The company is also working to attract online advertisers who want to reach potential customers through visual content, with the ads eventually targeting ChatGPT’s 1.2 billion weekly users once they roll out globally.
Alongside the new ad format, OpenAI is expanding its measurement tools and partner ecosystem. Click attribution partners now include AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Rockerbox, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge, and Tenjin. Advanced measurement partners include Fospha, Measured, and INCRMNTAL. OpenAI has also partnered with Haus, Measured, and WorkMagic for geo-based advertising experiments, and is developing brand suitability evaluation pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science.
The integration of display ads into image generation results could disrupt the user experience for some. This may push casual users toward paid subscriptions to avoid ads — an outcome that could serve OpenAI’s broader goal of making ChatGPT a viable ad-supported business for those on free and lower-cost plans.
