OpenAI announced on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, that it is adding voice-based agentic features to the ChatGPT mobile app, enabling users to trigger workflows such as drafting documents and summarizing emails using their voice.

Plus and Pro subscribers will gain access to the Work tab on mobile, where they can create documents, draft emails, summarize Slack messages, build sites, create presentations, and use a cloud browser. The Work tab also provides access to areas including finances within ChatGPT. Free and Go users will be able to work with plugins and connected apps.

Alongside the agentic features, OpenAI said voice conversations in ChatGPT will produce richer text output. Users will be able to switch between text and voice, and can start a conversation on mobile and resume it on desktop.

The rollout follows OpenAI’s July 2026 launch of GPT-Live, a conversational model the company later integrated into its desktop app, allowing users to complete tasks in the Work tab or build apps in the Codex tab via voice. The mobile update brings comparable capabilities to phones.

OpenAI cited growing user demand as context for the move, noting that an increasing number of users are turning to voice to issue commands to AI assistants for complex tasks.

The update arrives as competition in the AI assistant space continues to develop. Anthropic recently made handoffs between mobile and desktop easier and merged its Cowork and Chat interfaces. OpenAI, however, is keeping chat and workspaces separate in its app.
