OpenAI has hired three former Patreon executives to build out its product strategy for creators, with an announcement tied to the company’s upcoming DevDay event on September 29, 2026.

Sam Yam, co-founder and former technology chief of Patreon, announced on X that he is joining OpenAI to lead Creator Product. He is bringing two former Patreon colleagues with him: Drew Rowny, Patreon’s former product head, and Shannon Ma, its former engineering head, both of whom stepped down from Patreon in recent weeks.

Yam framed the move as an opportunity to build tools specifically for creators and their communities. “We’re going to build together with Creators at OpenAI and share early access to a new set of tools that I think will be critically valuable to Creators and their communities,” he said in his announcement. He also pointed followers toward OpenAI DevDay, set for Tuesday, September 29th, and linked to a post from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman teasing an additional announcement expected this week.

The hiring of executives who helped establish Patreon’s creator-subscription model suggests OpenAI may be looking to enter the creator monetization space. Patreon is widely credited with shaping the creator-subscription economy.

The departures come at a difficult time for Patreon. The company laid off 20 percent of its staff in January 2026 and recently announced an extensive roadmap to overhaul its user features. Yam had co-founded Patreon 13 years ago before leaving to join OpenAI.
