OpenAI Launches Collaborative Workspace Tools, Competing Directly With Microsoft and Google
At its Sept. 29 Dev Day in San Francisco, OpenAI unveiled Space, a shared ChatGPT workspace where coworkers and AI “Dots” can act on files and pages. Pages and collaborative Slides add document creation and multi-user presentation editing.
OpenAI announced a suite of office-style features for ChatGPT at its Dev Day developer conference in San Francisco on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, putting the AI company into more direct competition with Microsoft and Google in the workplace software market.
The centerpiece of the announcement is a feature called Space — a shared workspace inside ChatGPT where coworkers can collaborate with the chatbot and with AI agent personas called Dots. Dots are designed to carry out tasks on a user’s behalf. “Your pages and files all live together in Space, like they would in a drive,” said CEO Sam Altman during the presentation. “But spaces feel alive.” Altman added that users can give a page specific instructions, such as checking a team channel and updating the page with what it finds.
OpenAI also announced Pages, a word processor the company describes as “a new type of document, built for human and agent collaboration.” Positioned as a counterpart to Google Docs and Microsoft Word, Pages allows users to write, research, generate charts, create images, and visualize information.
Rounding out the announcements were collaborative slides — a presentation tool comparable to Microsoft PowerPoint. Slides can be generated through conversation within ChatGPT, and multiple workers and AI agents can edit them, leave comments, and collaborate within them.
OpenAI has maintained a close partnership with Microsoft since its early days, making the new product direction a notable shift. The move comes as Microsoft and other software companies, including Salesforce, have been releasing AI products of their own in an effort to keep pace with the changing software landscape. The competing expansions suggest the boundaries between AI platforms and traditional office software may continue to blur.
