Reddit Shifts to Logged-In Experience as AI-Driven Search Traffic Decline Accelerates
Reddit says search referrals fell by more than 1 million per week in October, prompting a logged-in pivot to limit AI scraping and pursue paid data-licensing deals. Q3 revenue rose 53% to $895 million, while daily active users reached 130.3 million.
Reddit announced in October 2026 that it is transitioning to a primarily “logged-in experience,” a significant departure from its open-web roots driven by falling search traffic and the rise of AI-powered search tools.
The company revealed the change during its third-quarter earnings call on Thursday, October 29, 2026. Co-founder and CEO Steve Huffman acknowledged the weight of the decision in a post on Reddit’s own platform. “I don’t know about you, but as someone whose life has been defined by the open internet, it’s a big change for me,” he wrote, adding that he believes it is “the right decision for our platform and the right decision for our business.”
The shift is being driven by two key pressures: a need to protect Reddit’s content from AI scraping — enabling the company to pursue paid data-licensing deals with AI model providers — and a broader decline in search-referred traffic. Reddit said search referrals dropped by more than one million per week on average in October alone. If the trend continues, the company warned that daily active users could fall by a low-double-digit percentage next quarter, down from 130.3 million in Q3. U.S. daily active users already fell from 53.2 million in Q2 to 50.7 million in Q3, a 2% year-over-year decline.
Despite the user declines, Reddit’s financials showed strong monetization gains. Revenue rose 53% year-over-year to $895 million, beating Wall Street expectations of roughly $875 million. Net income climbed 74% to $283 million. Average revenue per U.S. daily active user rose 53% to $13.82. Logged-in users, who provide more behavioral signals for ad targeting, could push those figures higher still.
Reddit said the transition will not happen overnight. Tests will begin in select markets outside the U.S. in Q4 2026, with no firm global timeline yet set. The company also confirmed it will preserve anonymous browsing through a rebuilt “incognito mode” and that being logged in will not require giving up anonymity.
The move could signal a broader shift away from the open web, as AI summaries increasingly reduce the need for users to click through to source websites — a trend Reddit noted is now affecting even Google’s bottom line.
