Reddit Tests Search Ads in 2026 as Google AI Cuts Traffic and User Growth Stalls
Reddit is testing contextual ads in search for select advertisers after warning that Google’s AI search is reducing referral traffic. Its Q4 sales forecast of $1B–$1.03B missed the $1.05B analyst estimate, while Q3 daily users held at 130.3M.
Reddit announced in November 2026 that it is testing ad placements within its search results pages, allowing advertisers to reach users as they search for products and recommendations on the platform. The move comes days after the company warned investors about declining search traffic and issued a weaker-than-expected revenue forecast.
“Ads in search may appear based on a range of factors, including contextual relevance to a user’s search query,” Reddit said in its announcement. The company described the rollout as “an initial test with a select group of eligible advertisers,” with plans to evaluate user response and refine the experience over time. As examples, Reddit suggested a search for “espresso station” could surface ads for espresso machines or coffee, while a search for “home office setup” might show ads for monitors, desks, or office chairs.
The test follows a difficult earnings report. Despite beating Wall Street estimates for revenue and earnings per share in Q3, Reddit’s stock fell after the company issued fourth-quarter guidance projecting sales of $1 billion to $1.03 billion — below analyst expectations of $1.05 billion. The shortfall was tied to declining search traffic referrals from Google, whose AI-powered search experience now answers queries directly on its results pages, reducing clicks to external sites like Reddit.
User growth has also slowed. Reddit reported 130.3 million global daily active users in Q3, flat quarter-over-quarter. U.S. daily active users dropped from 53.2 million in Q2 to 50.7 million, and were down 2% year-over-year. The company warned that daily active users could decline by a low double-digit percentage in Q4 if the trend continues.
To offset these pressures, Reddit is also planning a gradual shift to a logged-in experience, starting in markets outside the U.S. The company said logged-in users are more valuable to advertisers because they provide stronger signals about interests and behavior, enabling better-targeted ads. The logged-in model could also help protect Reddit’s content from unauthorized AI scraping.
