SpaceXAI Donates $1.5 Million in Grok Tokens to Omarchy Linux Project
In October 2026, SpaceXAI said its $1.5 million in Grok tokens will fund Omarchy development, code review and bug fixes through the Omacom Foundation. The contribution may renew scrutiny of creator David Heinemeier Hansson’s controversial political statements.
SpaceXAI announced in October 2026 that it is joining the Omacom Foundation as a Founding Corporate Patron and donating $1.5 million worth of Grok tokens to Omarchy, a Linux distribution created by David Heinemeier Hansson.
According to a blog post from Hansson, the donated tokens will primarily be used to accelerate development, review code, and patch bugs within the Omarchy project. The Omacom Foundation oversees the Omarchy Linux distribution.
Hansson is a Danish entrepreneur best known for creating Ruby on Rails and co-founding the company behind Basecamp. He has also drawn controversy for promoting anti-immigration views through his blog. In a July post, he compared immigrants to wolves and wrote, “When wolves get out of control, you shoot them.”
SpaceXAI’s backing of Omarchy adds to an existing pattern of corporate involvement with the project that has generated criticism. 1Password previously faced backlash for contributing to Omarchy. Cloudflare also drew scrutiny for its contributions; when questioned about them by Nilay Patel on the Decoder podcast, Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince said he did not think it was his job to “police different people’s political beliefs.”
The partnership may draw further attention to the tension between corporate open-source support and the public statements of the project’s creator. SpaceXAI’s decision to contribute specifically to Omarchy — given Hansson’s controversial profile — could prompt renewed debate among companies and developers about the implications of funding projects associated with figures whose public views have generated significant criticism.
