Email and productivity platform Superhuman announced in September 2026 that it has acquired Fathom, a Y Combinator-backed AI meeting notetaker, rather than continuing to develop a comparable tool internally.
Fathom was founded in 2020 and has raised over $30 million in funding. It was valued at $94 million in 2024, according to PitchBook data. The company counts Zoom Apps Fund, Telescope Partners, BoxOne Ventures, and Maven Ventures among its investors, alongside individual backers including Reddit CEO Steve Huffman, former Twitch CEO Emmett Shear, and Cruise co-founder Kyle Vogt. Fathom’s free plan has attracted more than 400,000 monthly active users, and over one million people have recorded meetings using the product.
Superhuman CEO Shishir Mehrotra said the company had tested a notetaker internally with select users earlier in 2026 before deciding to acquire an established product instead. “We’ve been working internally on this area for a while as well,” Mehrotra told TechCrunch. “It also becomes very clear how deep the products in this category are and how much you need to build. A lot of these products make the job feel really easy, but it’s actually quite tricky to do a great job in all parts.”
Fathom CEO Richard White said Superhuman’s 40 million user base was a key factor in the deal. “If we were to operate Fathom as a stand-alone company, we would have to build a lot of things that are already in the Superhuman platform,” he said.
The acquisition fits into Superhuman’s broader push toward agentic AI — software that can proactively initiate tasks rather than waiting for user prompts. Superhuman already offers an email client, a docs app, a calendar, a database solution, and an AI agent builder. Adding a meeting notetaker could allow the platform to draft emails, update data entries, schedule follow-up meetings, and extract insights from meeting recordings automatically. Mehrotra also said Superhuman is working on surfacing meeting context in real time.
The meeting notetaker market includes competitors such as Granola, Read AI, and Wispr, all of which have raised venture funding in the space.
