Meta to Lay Off 10 Percent of Workforce Wednesday as Employees Rush to Use Benefits

Meta will cut ~8,000 jobs (~10% of its ~80,000 staff) on Wed, May 21, 2026, sending termination notices at 4 a.m. local time in Singapore, London and San Francisco. Ahead of the cuts, employees rushed to use an annual $2,000 health-and-wellness benefit and a $200 triennial audio credit, as CEO Mark Zuckerberg said layoffs and moving 7,000 workers to AI roles will free capital for AI data centers.
