TikTok Permanently Bans Musk Documentary’s Account Days Before Wide Release

Following weeks of ad rejections, TikTok permanently suspended the film’s official account in October 2026, days before its wider release. YouTube and Google reversed their ad ban as an “error,” while TikTok and X kept theirs in place.

TikTok has banned the official social media account for Alex Gibney’s Elon Musk documentary, escalating a months-long pattern of major platforms blocking promotional content for the film. The ban was announced in October 2026, just ahead of the documentary’s wider release.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film’s distributor, Bleecker Street, was notified on Friday afternoon that a “permanent suspension” of the account was imminent. Neither TikTok nor Bleecker Street responded to requests for comment from The Verge.

The removal comes after a broader wave of ad rejections across major platforms. Last month, YouTube, Meta, X, and TikTok all faced criticism for refusing paid advertisements for the film. YouTube and Google reversed their decision, describing it as an “error,” but TikTok and X have maintained their positions and continued to block paid promotion of the documentary.

Banning the account outright marks a significant escalation beyond ad rejection. While TikTok has no formal affiliation with Elon Musk, the documentary features tech billionaire Larry Ellison — a part owner of TikTok — via a text message in which he offers to help Musk fund his purchase of Twitter.

The timing carried a notable irony: shortly before the account was removed, it posted a message urging viewers to watch the film “before it gets shut down.”

The ban may draw further scrutiny to the relationship between platform ownership and content moderation decisions, particularly given Ellison’s appearance in the film and his stake in TikTok.
