YouTube Adds Conversational AI Editing Tool for Creators, Coming in Early 2027
At Made On YouTube on Sept. 23, 2026, YouTube demoed editing by chat or voice, including AI-selected takes, music, transitions, text overlays, and pause removal. It’s coming to Shorts and YouTube Create in early 2027, while creators can still use the manual timeline.
YouTube announced a conversational video editing tool at its Made On YouTube event on September 23, 2026, allowing creators to edit footage by typing or speaking instructions in plain language rather than manually working through a traditional editing timeline.
The feature works through a chat interface where creators direct an AI to perform editing tasks. During the event, YouTuber Happy Kelli demonstrated the tool by uploading footage of herself dancing in different outfits and asking the AI to select the best take for each. She then added music and transitions through the same interface. The tool can also add text overlays, remove pauses in speech, and offer suggestions based on the context of the conversation.
Creators retain the option to return to a manual editing timeline at any point. “If at any point I want even more control, I can jump back into the editing timeline and manually adjust things myself,” Happy Kelli said on stage. She described the tool as “a collaborative partner that edits with you, not for you.”
YouTube framed the tool as a response to the time demands of video editing — noting that a one-hour shoot can require ten or more hours of editing work. The aim is to speed up that process without removing creative control from the creator.
Conversational editing will be available for both YouTube Shorts and the YouTube Create app in early 2027. While the tool may reduce editing time for some creators, others may be reluctant to incorporate AI into a workflow they consider central to their individual style.
