Google announced in August 2026 that it will begin enforcing memory usage limits on Android apps distributed through the Play Store, with consequences ranging from reduced app performance to removal of publishing privileges for developers who don’t comply.
The policy stems from memory limitations first introduced with Android 17, which initially appeared on Pixel phones. Google published a memo outlining the Play Store’s role in enforcing these restrictions, citing the need “to help developers navigate industry-wide hardware constraints and Android’s broader memory limits.” Enforcement is set to begin in February 2027, giving app makers several months to bring their products into compliance.
The rules will apply across a wide range of devices. Google warned developers that “an increasing number of manufacturers will leverage the Android per-app memory limits across their portfolio of device RAM configurations from 4GB to 16GB+ devices” over the coming year.
The penalties for non-compliance are significant. According to Google, apps that exceed memory limits “will be slowed down and may be terminated.” Beyond that, the company indicated broader consequences for the Play Store itself: “Apps and games that do not meet these thresholds may see reduced app visibility and publishing capabilities on Google Play,” with additional details to follow later in 2026.
The policy shift comes amid what Google describes as an industry-wide memory shortage that has already affected hardware. The base configurations of the Pixel 11 Pro and 11 Pro XL, for instance, ship with less RAM than last year’s models — a detail that may not be coincidental given the new restrictions.
For Android users, the policy could mean better performance on lower-RAM devices if developers successfully optimize their apps. For developers, it represents a hard deadline to rework how their applications manage memory or risk losing visibility on one of the world’s largest app distribution platforms.
