Google introduced a new password manager switching feature for Android in September 2026 that allows users to migrate passwords and passkeys between apps without downloading CSV files.
The process works by having users open their new password manager app and selecting the option to import from their existing app. Android then detects compatible password manager apps on the device and coordinates the transfer between them. Users can review what is being transferred and approve the move in a few taps.
A key aspect of the feature is its support for passkeys — a newer form of authentication — meaning users will not need to reconfigure passkeys after switching to a different app. Google also noted that the approach reduces the risk of exposing sensitive data that comes with exporting credentials to a CSV file.
The feature is already available in Google’s own password manager app and with select third-party partners. Bitwarden, 1Password, and Dashlane are currently supported, with additional apps expected to be added in the future.
The password manager switching feature is compatible with any Android device running Android 8 or above.
