Google launched Gemini 3.5 Flash on Tuesday, May 20, 2026, at its annual Google I/O developer conference. The company describes it as its strongest model yet for coding and autonomous AI agents — systems that can plan, build, and execute tasks with minimal human input.
The model can independently run coding pipelines, manage research projects, and, in internal tests, build an operating system from scratch. Google engineer Varun Mohan demonstrated agents working on separate components simultaneously before combining their output into a full operating system inside Antigravity, Google’s agentic development platform and IDE.
Koray Kavukcuoglu, DeepMind’s chief technologist, said 3.5 Flash “outperforms our latest frontier model, 3.1 Pro, on nearly all the benchmarks,” including coding, agentic tasks, and multimodal reasoning. He added it is four times faster than other frontier models, with an optimized version running 12 times faster at the same quality level. That speed is central to its design, enabling multiple AI agents to run in parallel on long-running tasks.
Google also released Antigravity 2.0, a standalone desktop application built around agent-first development. Tulsee Doshi, Google’s senior director and head of product, said the model can run autonomously for multiple hours but will pause to request user input when it encounters decision points requiring human judgment.
When Google releases its forthcoming 3.5 Pro model, the two are designed to work together — with Pro acting as orchestrator and Flash handling sub-agent tasks. Doshi described it as a division between deep reasoning work and “brute force tool use capabilities.”
Gemini 3.5 Flash is now the default model in the Gemini app and in AI Mode in Search globally. It will also power Gemini Spark, Google’s new personal AI agent designed to run around the clock for consumers.
The broader rollout carries scrutiny. Google is currently facing a lawsuit following the death of a man who had spent weeks chatting with Gemini before nearly committing a mass casualty event. Google says Gemini 3.5 has strengthened cyber and CBRN safeguards and is better calibrated to engage with sensitive questions rather than refuse them outright.
Gemini 3.5 Flash is available now through Antigravity, the Gemini API, Gemini Enterprise, the Gemini app, and AI Mode in Search.
