Amazon launched a new Alexa for Shopping feature in September 2026 called “Update Me When,” which sends users personalized notifications about events that could prompt a purchase — even before the shopper thinks to look.
The feature can alert users when a favorite brand launches a new product line, when a new season of a TV show drops, when an artist announces a concert tour, when an author releases a new book, or when a tech company unveils a new product. Users must configure these alerts themselves to get started.
The launch marks a shift in how Amazon is deploying Alexa. Historically, the assistant has responded to direct product questions from shoppers. With “Update Me When,” Alexa moves toward anticipating purchase triggers rather than simply answering queries. Amazon has not ruled out a more automated future — the company notes it could eventually generate alerts automatically or suggest subscriptions to shoppers as they browse.
“Update Me When” is one of several AI-powered shopping features Amazon highlighted at the same time. Among the existing tools, a price tracking feature allows users to ask Alexa to notify them when a product hits a specific price or discount level, and can even automatically complete the purchase if set conditions are met.
Amazon has also been using Alexa to surface personalized deals, create shopping guides, build carts from past purchases, track pricing history, display AI overviews on product pages, transcribe handwritten lists into cart items, and compare products.
Taken together, the features suggest Amazon is using AI to make Alexa a more proactive presence in the shopping process, rather than a passive search tool.
