Google launched Chrome 153 on September 8, 2026, marking the browser’s official shift from a four-week to a two-week release cycle across desktop, iOS, and Android — a change the company had announced earlier in the year.
The accelerated schedule is driven by two converging pressures: a higher volume of security patches and faster-moving threats, both of which Google attributes in part to AI. Automated AI tools and community bug reports have increased the pace at which vulnerabilities are discovered, while AI-assisted attacks have shortened the window in which those vulnerabilities can be exploited. By releasing updates more frequently, Google aims to shrink the “N-day” patch gap — the time between when a security flaw becomes publicly known and when a fix reaches end users.
Faster releases also allow Chrome to ship new features more quickly, which Google says is increasingly important as AI-assisted software development has enabled a new wave of browser competitors. Alternative browsers currently vying for market share include Brave, Dia, Opera Neon, Perplexity’s Comet, and DuckDuckGo’s browser. Google is also actively adding and iterating on AI features within Chrome itself, which the company says demands a faster update cadence.
The change may carry broader industry implications. As the most-used browser globally, Chrome’s release practices can influence standards across the web. Mozilla, Microsoft, and Brave have already moved to two-week schedules following Chrome’s lead.
This is not Chrome’s first release schedule adjustment. Google moved from a six-week to a four-week cycle in 2021, building on its long-standing “release early, release often” philosophy established more than a decade earlier.
