French AI lab Mistral AI announced on September 8, 2026 that it has raised €3 billion (approximately $3.58 billion) in a Series D round, valuing the company at more than €21 billion (approximately $24.39 billion). Mistral described it as “the largest equity fundraising round ever completed by a European technology company.”
The round was led by Samsung Electronics, with EQT-managed Scaleup Europe Fund and existing investor PSG Equity serving as co-leads. American investors also participated, including existing backers a16z, Nvidia, and Salesforce Ventures, along with new investors Advent and BlackRock. The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg joined as a new backer, and Dutch chipmaker ASML is listed as a major partner and investor.
Mistral said it will use the funds to scale compute capacity, build infrastructure, accelerate commercial growth, and expand internationally. Among its stated goals is building 1 GW of compute capacity in Europe by 2030. The company also recently unveiled tools allowing customers to choose which regions process their AI queries, and has begun hosting third-party open-weight AI models — including Chinese ones — positioning itself as an AI services provider focused on customer control.
The fundraise reflects growing demand for sovereign AI infrastructure — AI systems built and operated outside U.S. control. Mistral, which now operates in 20 countries, has focused its commercial strategy on serving governments and corporations that want to maintain oversight of the AI tools they use. French President Macron commented on the round via X, framing it as part of France and South Korea’s goal of “building a third way in AI.”
Mistral continues to work with U.S. companies, including Microsoft, through a strategic partnership that was significantly expanded in July 2026. The company’s international investor base and customer focus on sovereignty-conscious governments and enterprises may position it to benefit from ongoing concerns about dependence on American AI providers.
