Google announced a series of updates to its Gemini app at its annual Google I/O event on May 19, 2026, introducing new features designed to position the app as an all-purpose AI hub rather than a stand-alone chatbot.
The headline additions include a “Daily Brief” feature, a redesigned interface under a new design language called “Neural Expressive,” a personal AI agent called Gemini Spark, and access to a new AI video model called Gemini Omni.
Daily Brief is a personalized morning digest that pulls information from a user’s inbox, calendar, and tasks, organizing them into a prioritized overview with suggested next steps. The feature is rolling out immediately to Google AI subscribers in the United States.
The app’s redesigned interface features fluid animations, vibrant colors, new typography, and haptic feedback. Gemini’s responses have also been reformatted — key information now appears in bold at the top, with additional text, images, and timelines accessible as users scroll, rather than presenting everything as a single block of text.
Gemini Spark is described as a 24/7 cloud-based personal AI agent that continues working in the background even when a user’s phone is locked. It allows users to create custom workflows and is currently in testing, with availability expected for Google AI Ultra subscribers the following week.
Gemini Omni, the new AI video model, combines Gemini with Google’s generative media models. It accepts audio, image, and video uploads and generates video outputs from simple text prompts. The model is rolling out to Google Flow and YouTube Shorts for Google AI subscribers.
Google said the Gemini app currently has more than 900 million monthly users across more than 230 countries and over 70 languages. The updates suggest the company is looking to expand that base while competing more directly with AI platforms such as ChatGPT and Claude.
