Google Cloud and Accenture announced in September 2026 a joint business unit that will embed engineers directly inside enterprises to help them adopt Google’s AI tools. The new group, called the Accenture Gemini Enterprise Business Group, will train up to 1,000 of Accenture’s consultants as “forward-deployed engineers” (FDEs) to build custom AI applications on Google’s Gemini Enterprise platform. The unit will operate under Accenture.
The deal was first reported by The Wall Street Journal and is the latest in a series of FDE expansions Google Cloud has pursued this year. Earlier in 2026, Google committed $750 million to a partner ecosystem that embedded its own FDEs across consultancies including Capgemini, Cognizant, and Deloitte. The company also struck a multi-year partnership with CVC Capital Partners to place FDEs inside the investment firm’s portfolio companies.
The push reflects a broader challenge facing Google Cloud and its hyperscaler rivals: massive infrastructure spending has not yet produced proportional AI revenue. Google Cloud generated $24.8 billion in the second quarter of 2026, while its parent company Alphabet had accumulated $811 billion in purchase commitments and contractual obligations as of June 30. The gap between investment and return has made driving enterprise AI adoption a priority across the industry, with OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft, and Amazon all launching similar FDE-style business units.
Google’s urgency may also be tied to its relatively small share of enterprise AI spending. According to August 2026 data from Ramp, Google accounted for roughly 6% of enterprise AI spending among Ramp’s U.S. customers, compared to 43.5% for Anthropic and 39.7% for OpenAI. A Google spokesperson noted that Ramp’s customer base tends to exclude the large enterprises signing major strategic deals with Google Cloud.
For Accenture, the Google arrangement adds to a string of FDE programs launched in 2026, including similar initiatives with Microsoft in March, ServiceNow in May, and SAP in June. Dedicated AI deployment firms such as Ode and OpenAI’s The Deployment Co. are also competing in this space, posing a potential challenge to established consultancies.
