Light, the company behind minimalist smartphones designed for limited use, announced in September 2026 that it is adding rideshare access to its devices through a new Rideshare tool supporting both Uber and Lyft.
The feature is available for owners of the Light Phone III and the upcoming Light Flip. Users can search pickup and drop-off locations, view fares and estimated arrival times, select trip options, save frequent destinations, book rides, and call their driver directly from the phone.
The integration is built on a partnership with Tremp, a company that already offers SMS-based rideshare ordering. Users set up access through Light’s dashboard website, the same way other LightOS tools are configured. Tremp charges a 10 percent service fee with a $2 minimum, though it will waive that fee for the first five rides placed within 30 days of creating an account.
The Rideshare tool also serves as an early preview of the LightOS “tool library” SDK, which Light says will allow third-party developers to build additional features for its phones while keeping feeds and notifications to a minimum. According to a blog post from Light, user submissions for the Tool Library are expected to open by the end of September 2026, with those tools becoming available to all users a few weeks after that.
Light cofounder Kaiwei Tang has previously addressed the apparent tension between minimalism and expanding functionality, stating: “I’m not trying to design vintage phones… I want to design all this modern technology, from the ground up, and eliminate all the bullshit.”
Adding targeted features like rideshare access may help retain users who might otherwise return to conventional smartphones for specific needs, though how the tool performs in practice remains to be seen.
