Apple launches iPhone Duo, its first foldable phone starting $1,999

The question behind this launch is straightforward: what would make unfolding your phone worth doing every day? A bigger screen is easy to appreciate in a demonstration. Earning a permanent place in someone’s routine requires more—especially at this price.

The Duo combines a 5.4-inch outer screen with a 7.6-inch inner display. Apple says both share an aspect ratio, helping content transition between them. For me, that software story is the more interesting part of the announcement. Think about checking a reference while writing a message, or comparing two documents without repeatedly switching screens. Those are small tasks, but small improvements repeated throughout the day can matter more than a spectacular demo. The test will be whether the experience feels natural enough that people use it without thinking about the hinge.

Apple’s hardware pitch includes an A20 Pro chip, vapor-chamber cooling, and two batteries. The company claims up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display or 44 hours on the outer one. The cameras include 48MP main and ultrawide units, a 12MP Center Stage front camera, and an inner under-display FaceTime camera. Duo Preview lets subjects see their framing on the outer screen; Smart Take automatically photographs people when it detects they are ready. The preview feature strikes me as a practical use of the second display. Giving the person in the photograph a way to check the composition could make taking pictures more collaborative. Still, a feature list cannot tell us how reliable automatic capture will be, how the inner screen will feel after months of use, or how comfortable the device will be during a long call. Those questions need hands-on evaluation.

I’ve been using the iOS 27 beta for about a month. In everyday use, it has been pretty stable and feels faster than iOS 26. Siri, however, still feels very basic in the beta I’m using. My initial read is that the Duo’s appeal will depend on how often its extra space solves a real inconvenience. For someone who frequently reads, compares information, or works across apps on a phone, there is an understandable proposition here. For someone whose phone use is mostly quick interactions, the benefit may be harder to justify.
