Google announced at its annual Google I/O developer conference in May 2026 that its Android CLI (command line interface) has reached a stable version 1.0, enabling AI coding agents to build Android apps regardless of which platform developers prefer.
The tool introduces a new “android studio” command that allows AI agents to tap into the capabilities of Android Studio and access specialized Android development knowledge. From there, agents can use a range of additional commands and tools to assist in building Android applications.
The release is notable because it extends Google’s Android development resources beyond its own ecosystem. The company acknowledged that many developers are now building Android apps using AI agents from other providers — including Anthropic’s Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex — and Android CLI is designed to give those tools access to the same specialized knowledge previously contained within Android Studio.
Google’s own agentic development platform, Google Antigravity, will include an optional bundle that installs the tools and knowledge from Android CLI, allowing it to perform core Android app development tasks as well.
The move suggests Google is prioritizing broader accessibility of its Android development expertise, potentially making it easier for developers to build for the platform no matter which AI coding tool they use.
