Apple’s iOS 27, set to launch later in September 2026, will include a feature called iPhone Handoff that allows users to share a single phone number across two iPhones. The feature was briefly mentioned during Apple’s WWDC keynote in June 2026 but received no detailed explanation at the time.
A demo clip has since surfaced showing how the feature is configured inside Xcode 27’s Device Hub. The setup pairs two iPhones together, designating one as the primary device and the other as a “companion.” Users would be able to temporarily switch their active number to the companion device as needed.
The timing of the feature’s launch aligns with the anticipated release of the foldable iPhone Ultra. Because that device is expected to be both large and expensive, iPhone Handoff could allow owners to leave it at home and shift their number to a smaller, more affordable iPhone instead.
Carrier support will be required for the feature to work. Code references to T-Mobile US and Telekom.de have been identified, though support from other carriers has not been confirmed.
For users who already own two iPhones — or who plan to purchase the foldable iPhone Ultra while keeping an older device — iPhone Handoff may offer a practical way to manage both without maintaining separate numbers or plans.
