Nothing is rolling out OS 5.0, a major software update built on Android 17, beginning with an open beta on August 26, 2026. The update introduces homescreen customization options, a dedicated Glyph Interface app, and a range of quality-of-life improvements across Nothing’s phone lineup.
The headline design change is adaptive color support: app icons and widgets can now pull color tints directly from your wallpaper, updating automatically whenever the wallpaper changes. Nothing describes the feature as working alongside Android’s built-in Dynamic Colors, allowing specific elements to shift with your wallpaper while the system’s predominantly monochrome look remains intact. The feature is being offered as an optional additional theme, leaving the existing monochrome design available for those who prefer it. Lockscreen clockfaces can also now reflect wallpaper colors, and two new clockface designs — “Gooey” and “Micrographics” — have been added.
For phones equipped with Nothing’s Glyph Interface lighting, a new dedicated app consolidates all related features and controls into a single location. Other additions include a “Geist” system typeface, an Away Time widget that tracks time spent away from the phone, a Collector widget that converts pictures of items into home or lock screen icons, the ability to select and move multiple app icons simultaneously, animated status bar icons, and single-tap Bluetooth controls in Quick Settings.
Because Nothing OS 5.0 is based on Android 17, it also carries platform-level updates including enhanced Quick Share, Noto 3D emojis, and expanded dark theme support. On the AI side, Essential AI gains Model Context Protocol (MCP) support, improved transcriptions via Essential Voice, a Smart Collections feature for organizing captures, and on-device Essential App building.
The open beta launches first on the Nothing Phone 3, with most other Nothing phones expected to receive the update by January 2027. Several older devices will not be getting the update, including the Phone 1, Phone 2, and CMF Phone 1.
