OpenAI released a dedicated ChatGPT desktop app for Linux on Tuesday, August 12, 2026, extending its desktop presence to one of the few major platforms where it had previously been absent.
The app, released in preview, gives Linux users access to ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex. Supported distributions include desktop variants of Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44. Because those distributions serve as the base for many downstream desktop variants, a broader range of Linux setups may also be compatible.
OpenAI cited user demand as the driver behind the release. “Linux has been one of the most-requested platforms for the desktop app, and this launch extends ChatGPT and Codex across every major desktop operating system,” the company said. The release is available worldwide.
While Linux encompasses hundreds of distributions in total, the supported distros OpenAI selected represent a significant portion of the desktop Linux user base, particularly among open source developers — a community that had been vocal in requesting the app.
OpenAI’s arrival on Linux follows a similar move by competitor Anthropic, which released a Claude desktop app for Linux approximately one month earlier. Anthropic’s app supports Ubuntu 22.04 or later and Debian 12 or later.
The ChatGPT Linux app’s release means OpenAI’s desktop client is now available across all major operating systems, potentially broadening access to its tools for developers and users who rely on Linux environments.
